Mike was growing tired. Not from a lack of sleep, although he was defiantly suffering from it. This suffering was the result of time, time spent chasing down a criminal responsible for crimes against his way of life. Before the mutations that turned friends against one another and tore families apart. Mike had a home, a job, and a family with nothing more to want for, but evidently it was all too perfect to last. When he first realised he had suffered a mutation and had powers like the ones being shouted about all across the news, he knew he could no longer stay in the armed forces. The immediate knee-jerk reaction of the government was to deploy the army to ‘protect its citizens’, ignorant to the fact that fellow red, white and blue Americans were the targets of their iron sights. He went AWOL and stayed off the grid trying to keep his powers to himself until his sister was murdered by another mutant.
It was never known if it was an intentional attack or it was just an accident where someone failed to control their new powers. Regardless, nothing would bring her back and all that Mike could do was focus on seeing those responsible to justice. Not the person who murdered his sister, but the scientists in the labs that created the virus in the first place. He had spent the past few years chasing down names on the government employee list of the labs the virus spawned from, taking great pleasure in crossing them off one by one. However, Dr. James McKenzie, one of the true architects of this nightmare always eluded him. He had gotten close in china, breaking into her lab mere minutes after she had made her getaway, but close wasn’t good enough. He had to do better.
He had tracked her down to a little town in Italy, nowhere near the outskirts of a major city but with the essentials nearby. The buildings recent deliveries were a firework display of a new lab being resupplied. Specialist test tubes and new reagents that had been sent through a few accounts and addresses to hide its final destination but it wasn’t complex enough to throw Mike and his military training off the scent. After a few days of scouting the place out, he had seen James leave and return only once in that time, heavily dressed as to avoid any CCTV cameras and curious eyes. That was all the confirmation he needed.
Mike was now camped outside the building he knew to be McKenzie’s new lab for what felt like days, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. He wanted to end this, this woman had been too big a weight on his shoulders after his sisters funeral and it was about time she answered for all the deaths, chaos and the nightmare of a world that was now reality for all.
